What is a dry cooler?
 Feb 28, 2026|View:118

How Does It Work?

The working principle is straightforward:

  1. Hot fluid (e.g., a glycol solution) flows inside finned tubes within the unit.

  2. External air is forced over these tubes by fans, or flows across them naturally.

  3. Heat exchange occurs between the air and the fluid: the air absorbs the heat, thereby reducing the temperature of the fluid inside the tubes.

Main Application Areas

Due to their energy efficiency and water-saving design, dry coolers are widely used in various fields:

  • Data Centers: As a core component of energy-efficient HVAC systems, they utilize natural outdoor cooling sources to cool server rooms, significantly reducing energy consumption.

  • Industrial Cooling: Used to cool equipment in power plants, petrochemical facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and more.

  • Commercial Refrigeration: Applied in refrigeration systems for large supermarkets, warehouses, and distribution centers.

  • HVAC Systems: Used in conjunction with chillers or in "free cooling" systems to replace part of the mechanical cooling during intermediate seasons or winter.

  • Industrial Heat Treatment: In specialized processes (like vacuum furnaces), they provide clean, closed-loop circulating cooling to protect critical equipment.

Common Types & Key Features

Dry coolers come in various designs and specifications to suit different needs:

  • Structure: Depending on installation space and heat dissipation requirements, they can be designed for horizontal or vertical airflow, and in flat-bed or V-shaped configurations.

  • Core Components: The critical part is the coil, typically made of copper tubes with high-efficiency aluminum fins, offering good heat transfer and corrosion resistance.

  • Key Options: They can be equipped with EC energy-saving fans, anti-corrosion coatings, adiabatic spray systems (for auxiliary cooling during high summer temperatures), and free-cooling valve packages.

  • Performance Range: The cooling capacity of these products varies widely, from small units around 10kW to large industrial units up to 2000kW.
