Advantages of ammonia refrigeration

1. Excellent Refrigeration Performance

  • High Refrigeration Efficiency: Ammonia (R717) has a high latent heat of vaporization, providing strong refrigerating capacity per unit mass. Its high thermal conductivity ensures superior heat transfer, often resulting in a higher Coefficient of Performance (COP) compared to many fluorocarbon refrigerants.

  • Wide Applicability: Suitable for various low-temperature and industrial applications, including cold storage, food processing, chemical plants, and ice rinks.

2. Environmental Benefits

  • Zero ODP and Zero GWP: Ammonia has no ozone depletion potential (ODP=0) and negligible global warming potential (GWP=0), making it an environmentally friendly natural refrigerant.

  • Natural Working Fluid: It is a naturally occurring substance, not synthetic, and does not contribute to long-term atmospheric pollution.

3. Cost-Effectiveness

  • Low Cost: Ammonia is significantly cheaper than most synthetic refrigerants and is widely available.

  • Energy Efficient: Its excellent heat transfer properties reduce compressor workload, leading to lower long-term operating costs.

  • Durable Systems: Ammonia is non-corrosive to steel (when moisture is controlled), contributing to longer system lifespan.

4. Safety Features

  • Easy Leak Detection: Its strong pungent odor allows for immediate detection of even minor leaks.

  • Controlled Flammability: While ammonia is flammable, its flammability range in air (16–25%) is narrow, and risks are manageable in well-ventilated industrial settings.

5. Compatibility and Maintenance

  • Material Compatibility: Compatible with steel, cast iron, and certain alloys, but should not contact copper or zinc (except phosphorus-deoxidized copper).

  • Mature Maintenance Practices: Ammonia refrigeration has a long history, with extensive expertise and readily available parts.

Primary Applications

  • Large-Scale Industrial Refrigeration: Meat and poultry processing, seafood freezing, dairy industries, and distribution warehouses.

  • Process Cooling: Chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

  • Specialized Air Conditioning: Limited use in large district cooling or industrial air conditioning systems.
