Freon is the common name for a class of fluorine-containing and chlorine-containing (some chlorine-free) hydrocarbon refrigerants. It is not a single substance, but a general term for a group of compounds with similar refrigeration properties. It is widely used in various refrigeration equipment such as household air conditioners, industrial cold storage, refrigerators, and automotive air conditioners, and is an indispensable core medium in modern refrigeration technology.
The core advantages of Freon are high refrigeration efficiency and stable chemical properties. It is easy to vaporize and liquefy under normal temperature and pressure, and can quickly absorb and release heat during the phase change, adapting to refrigeration scenarios with different temperature requirements. According to differences in composition, common models are divided into three categories: traditional chlorine-containing Freon (such as R22), which has good refrigeration effect and low cost but strong damage to the ozone layer; hydrofluorocarbons (such as R134a, R410A), which are chlorine-free and do not damage the ozone layer, and are the current mainstream alternative models; mixed Freon (such as R407C), which combines the advantages of multiple refrigerants and is suitable for high-end refrigeration equipment.
Although Freon has made outstanding contributions in the refrigeration field, the environmental hazards of traditional chlorine-containing models cannot be ignored. When such Freon is released into the atmosphere, it will decompose into chlorine atoms, damage the ozone layer, lead to increased ultraviolet radiation, and also have a strong greenhouse effect, exacerbating global warming. Therefore, the international community has issued relevant conventions to gradually restrict and eliminate the use of highly hazardous Freon.

Refrigerants with chlorine-free, low Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP) have become the focus of research and development.
